The legal requirement for transportation of high-pressure gas cylinders is being implemented by the law and traffic fines issued for transgressing these rules.

We bring this to the attention of all organisations transporting gas suppression cylinders around the country.

Gas Cylinder Transportation

Some points for transportation of gas suppression cylinders:

  1. ALL cylinders MUST have transport caps.
  2. Driver must carry a TREM card (Transport Emergency Card) in his vehicle at all times.
  3. Vehicle must have correct hazardous cargo signage which is the correct size with emergency information displayed in correct position on vehicle.
  4. All three Standard Dangerous Goods signs must be displayed in the correct position on the vehicle, i.e., (No cell phones, No open flames, No smoking).
  5. The driver must be trained and certificated to carry Dangerous Goods (DG) and must carry a current certificate at all times.
  6. The vehicle must carry the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) of all dangerous goods at all times.
  7. The vehicle must be specially licensed to carry Dangerous Goods and this must be noted on the license disc.
  8. The correct fire extinguisher must be fitted to the vehicle.
  9. If the truck has a specialised lifting device (e.g. Crane or hydraulic tail lift) then the driver must be trained and carry a current certificate of proficiency of operation of these devices at all times.
  10. If the driver has assistants travelling in the vehicle, he should have a PDP license.
  11. The driver must have a relevant code license according to size of vehicle.
  12. The orange diamond indicating hazardous goods in transit must be displayed on front of vehicle when transporting dangerous cargo and be capable of being reversed when carrying a non-hazardous load.
  13. Insurance must be notified that the vehicle carries dangerous goods and be endorsed for Hazchem clean-up in the case of an accident, failing which the owner of the vehicle is liable for this cost.
  14. Cylinders should be transported upright, if possible, and be very well secured at all times – If cylinders are transported horizontally, they MUST be securely supported, be palletised and have transport caps fitted.
