Cable securingSome contractors cannot get passed the habit of securing cables with plastic cable ties.

PH 30 cables are installed providing 30 minutes resistance to fire and then secure it with plastic cable ties that in a fire condition will allow the cable to fall to the floor pulling out terminations in the detector and acting as a safety hazard to persons fleeing from the property.

Plastic cable ties are not permitted for the securing of cables, or in the case of the picture above, securing the actual fire detector!

GOOD NEWS

Cable securing 2Proof that PH 30 cable is the correct thing: -

A fire broke out in a store room where a fire detection cable run passed through. The fire was extinguished, although severe damage was recorded in the store. When the fire contractor arrived on site the following day the fire detection system was still operational even though the PVC conduit used for support had melted away.

Would FR 20 have survived this fire? I doubt it. Use fire resistant cables for all fire detection circuits.
